Date Chutney From Sri Lanka

Total Time: 30 mins Preparation Time: 10 mins Cook Time: 20 mins

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dates, deseeded and chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds, crushed
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 2 green cardamoms, crushed
  • 2 cloves, crushed
  • 1/2 inch cinnamon stick
  • 3/4 cup vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sultana
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt

Recipe

  • 1 place the vinegar in a thick bottomed pan on medium heat and add garlic-ginger paste and all the spices.
  • 2 cover and add dates after 2 minutes and cook over a low heat until the liquid thickens but the dates are not pulpy.
  • 3 mash with a big spoon gently and add the sultanas and cook for a further 2 minutes.
  • 4 discard the cinnamon stick, add salt and set aside to cool.
  • 5 serve with your meals or on sandwiches anytime you like.
