Bobotie Pie

Total Time: 50 mins Preparation Time: 15 mins Cook Time: 35 mins

Ingredients

  • 500 g lean ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped finely
  • 15 ml cooking oil
  • 15 ml curry powder
  • 15 ml vinegar
  • 5 ml sugar
  • 90 ml minced dried fruit or 90 ml chutney
  • 5 ml salt
  • 1 slice white bread
  • 200 ml milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 50 g shortcrust pastry, sheet

Recipe

  • 1 saute the onion until transparent, then add the curry powder, meat, vinegar, sugar chutney and salt.
  • 2 bring to the boil then remove from heat. soak the bread in the milk, squeeze out (reserving the milk) and mash into mince. add 1 egg, beaten, and mix well.
  • 3 beat the second egg with the reserved milk, season with salt and pepper. line a 25 cm pie dish with shortcrust pastry rolled out about 5mm thick. turn the mince into the pie-dish, pour over the milk and egg.
  • 4 bake in a 200c oven for ten minutes then turn the oven down to 180c and bake for another 20-25 minutes until pastry is golden and custard is set and brown.
